Bringing CrossFit to Frome…
Affinity Wellbeing Presents: CrossFit UVA
Taking ownership of your physical and mental wellbeing, understanding that fitness is a journey, recognizing where you are on that path, and how to move forward defines Affinity. As Coaches, it means teaching people these things, and empowering them to have the same control over their destiny that we do. It means sharing everything we’ve learnt with as many people as possible.
We introduced Kettlebell classes, and what we termed “Primal Training Bootcamps” and “Wild Runs” to Frome almost 6 years ago. Month in, month out, our community grew, as did the bond between them. We were fairly ignorant to the existence of CrossFit until fairly recently. Being so keen to reinvent the wheel, we didn’t stop to consider what was already out there. Many of the principals that we have come to behold as the key to successful fitness programming (constantly varied, functional movements at high intensity) were already waiting for us in a polished, brilliantly adaptable package – CrossFit.
The purpose of why we do, what we do and how we do it, has always been to inspire people and make your dreams and goals a reality. Getting you out of the “bog standard gym” and “old skool” way of thinking about fitness. Everything we do, we believe in challenging the status quo. We have always approached and thought things differently.
Our passion for wellbeing is what drives our expertise. For the last 2 years we have dedicated our time to opening The Den, and becoming better Coaches to our members through constant study, and new qualifications. Having now studied and trained in British Weightlifting, and CrossFit extensively and passed the relevant qualifications, we have decided to introduce our community to CrossFit. We are constantly looking to better ourselves for both our own good, and yours, and see CrossFit as a major gateway for that.
We find nothing more rewarding than Coaching and witnessing the benefits we bring to other peoples lives, not only physically but mentally too. We feel CrossFit brings with it a real opportunity for bettering wellness throughout life which is why we’re affiliating, and to be part of a larger worldwide community and help spread a “methodology” that we feel very passionate about.
Our passion for excellence in everything we do will shine through and allow people to overcome their fears, frustrations and insecurities, and introduce Frome (a town without CrossFit) to something truly amazing, which will inspire the confidence in people to do more than they ever expected of themselves. The promise of elite fitness awaits anyone and everyone who commits themselves to our methodologies, and CrossFit along with KBX, HEAT, Jump Breathe, The Run Of The Wild and The Call Of The Wild, we feel Affinity offers something unique and unrivalled for miles around. The chance for you to “be more human”, and to live a long life functioning as evolution intended.
Over the coming few weeks we’ll be introducing new sessions, new open gym times and the opportunity for you to sign up to our ‘CrossFit Intro Courses’ which must be completed to beable to take part in our CrossFit UVA training sessions. Existing Affinity members will get heavily discounted rates on a first come, first served basis. Members of our community who have completed 8 weeks of Lift, Learn, Evolve will be fast tracked through, as many of the foundational movements of CrossFit will have been covered during these sessions. Many of you will know quite a lot of the basics but will need to be brought up to scratch on some of the more advanced movements and mechanics (especially Olympic lifts, kipping pulls and muscle ups). We will be posting about this is due course. CrossFit, like everything we do is for all, there will always be adaptations, progressions and regressions for everyone from Grandmother to Elite Athlete.

What is CrossFit?
At CrossFit UVA (Until, Victory, Always) you will not find rows of stationary bikes and weight machines. But you will find pull-up bars, ropes, gym rings, barbells, rowers, kettlebells, sleds, wallballs, tyres and wide open space for squatting, running, jumping, climbing, lifting and throwing – moving your body the way it is supposed to be moved. It means that all your workouts will be comprised of exercises that mimic movements performed in day-to-day life or sport. We focus on improving functional movements that are necessary and common in your daily activities.
With our constantly varied programming, you will never get bored. We rarely do the same workouts, but when we do we do so on purpose, to test progress.
At CrossFit UVA we believe that training should prepare you for the challenges that life throws at you, the unknown and the unknowable, and with CrossFit UVA our program delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing. Combat, survival, many sports, and life reward this kind of fitness and, on average, punish the specialist.
CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program that consists of combinations of weightlifting, cardio and gymnastics. This program is used by more than 2000 gyms worldwide and is the principal fitness program for military, law enforcement, firefighters and first responders across the globe. The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. The same CrossFit routines can be used for elderly individuals with heart disease and cage fighters one month out from televised bouts. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change programs.
Classes, or Workouts Of the Day (WOD), normally last no longer than 1 hour. You get in, get out and get fit! Our fitness programming will improve your capacity in the ten general physical skills: cardio-respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy. The result is comprehensive physical fitness, restored vitality and health throughout life.
